Ruffian's Last Race

The beautifully elegant Ruffian steps onto the racetrack for her final, tragic race at Belmont Park on July 6^th, 1975, in a highly-publicized match race against champion colt Foolish Pleasure. The champion filly came to the race with a spotless 10-for-10 record, she had led at every point of call in every race so far, winning by an average margin of more than eight lengths often in record time. She was on the lead this time and looked the winner against a game Foolish Pleasure, but suffered a major leg injury and was ultimately euthanized. Ruffian is buried in the infield at Belmont Park.
