Affirmed and Alydar at the Travers

Triple Crown winner Affirmed, and rival Alydar, raced each other in a total of ten matches.  Affirmed won 7 of those times with only one race where both of them weren't the top two finishers.  Pictured here, the two champions are on their way to the starting gate of their last race together, The Travers Stakes at Saratoga Racecourse.  A heated race, Affirmed cut towards the rail forcing Alydar up on the backstretch and while Affirmed crossed the finish line first the stewards disqualified him to second giving Alydar his third win against the 1978 Horse of the Year and cementing them both into racing history.
