This One Photograph Packs an Historic Punch!

exhibition headley whitney miss oceana swale twelve off woody stevens

At the Tony Leonard Collection we love this photograph, so much so we put it in our current Exhibition.  It's not only extremely cool, titled 'Twelve Off' for a reason, it also has a story behind it that as horse fans we couldn't get enough of!  Thanks to this article from the Ocala Star-Banner we can bring it to you.  One of our favorite things about it is that Woody went on to win the Derby with Swale the next day, who Tony followed all the way to the Belmont in what would turn out to be his last race and forever iconize him as a beloved...

Dumpster-bound Derby pics no longer at Genuine Risk

It was Barbaro’s last victory. It was Tony Leonard’s last Derby photo. A bigger-than-life horse who energized the racing world. A bigger-than-life man who captured the most powerful athletes on earth. In 2006, Barbaro broke down. Tony Leonard broke down, too. And when the man who took the last living picture of Secretariat left his heaven on earth, he left behind a secret treasure in his Lexington home that came within a photo finish of being thrown in a dumpster. Ruffian's Last Race at Belmont Park, July 1975

Tony captured this image of the immortal Ruffian stepping onto the racetrack for the final time.  Undefeated in 10 lifetime starts, she faced Champion and Kentucky Derby Winner Foolish Pleasure in a match race at Belmont Park on July 6th, 1975.  Foaled at Claiborne Farm and carrying the silks of her breeder Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Janney, Jr., she had never been seriously challenged and had captured the hearts of fans worldwide.  Tragically, she suffered a fatal breakdown while on the lead and died of complications from surgery the following day.  She was buried in the infield at Belmont Park. Ruffian was posthumously awarded an Eclipse as Champion Three Year Old Filly and later inducted into...

8 Must See Movies for Horse Lovers and Racing Fans

What's your favorite movie about racehorses? Is it Dreamer (2005) with Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning, loosely based on the story of Mariah's Storm (best known in reality as the dam of superstar Giant's Causeway), or do you prefer the old Mariah's Storm (Tony Leonard photo) classics like Kentucky (1938) with Walter Brennan and Loretta Young? There are two Seabiscuits to choose from (but why not watch both?) - one based on the excellent bestseller by Laura Hillenbrand (Seabiscuit, 2003) and the other an entertaining vehicle for a teen-aged Shirley Temple and the always horsey Mickey Rooney (1949's The Story of Seabiscuit). Rooney's best known racing movie...
