In 1972 Riva Ridge was all the rage, pre-Secretariat but with the same team behind them. Owned by Meadow Stables' Ms. Penny Chenery, trained by Lucien Laurin and ridden by Ron Turcotte, he was highly anticipated to win the Triple Crown. After winning the Derby he didn't perform so well on a sloppy track at the Preakness. Coming back at the Belmont though he ran to impress, winning by an amazing eight lengths and giving his team two of the Jewels, including here at the Belmont, considered the true test of a champion. Just leaving the winners circle, Penny turned to Tony with a friendly hello as he captured the famous trio, a year later he would do the same, this time with all three jewels in their crown.
